Even during the Cold War, when the United States and the Soviet Union were at odds, there was a period called "détente." It's a diplomatic term derived from a French word meaning to loosen a drawn bow.
Mr. Kissinger, who led foreign policy in the US Republican government in the 1960s and 1970s, actively promoted the détente policy and advanced arms control negotiations with the Soviet Union.
The ideological conflict between the US and the Soviet Union cannot be changed. But ignoring conflict can lead to conflict. An attempt to control conflict was detente.
