Huawei is aggressively expanding into mobile, cloud services, and semiconductors. According to Bloomberg's aggregate data, the company's 18-year R & D spending was fourth only to Amazon, Alphabet and Samsung Electronics on a monetary basis.

Huawei's R & D budget last year increased by 149% compared to 2014, surpassing Apple, Microsoft and Samsung. Only Amazon, which increased its R & D spending by 210% over the same period, has increased its R & D spending faster than the company.

"Huawei's business achievements so far are largely due to a large R & D budget," said Takeshi Noritate, a telecom consultant and chairman of the industry website "Flying Net." "R & D expenses have greatly improved the company's competitiveness," he said.
