  • World's first Experiencing 5G services, the reason why communication services are "fundamentally changing"

    Series: Yasuhiro Yamane's Smartphone 2.0

On October 1st, a new service was launched in the United States that has made the smartphone industry lively. Verizon Wireless, an American telecommunications carrier, launched the world's first 5G service on the 1st. 5G is the latest fifth-generation communication technology for smartphones and mobile phones, and it is expected that the service will start in Japan next autumn ahead of schedule. 5G has characteristics that 4G does not have, and is expected to have an impact that will fundamentally change all communication services.

Mobile phone researcher living in Hong Kong. After being involved in manufacturing research at a major chemical manufacturer, he was stationed in Hong Kong before becoming independent. He spends most of the year covering overseas exhibitions and presentations, and writes articles from his own perspective. He specializes in fieldwork, and in the cities he visits, he always visits telecommunication carrier stores and mass retailers to collect information from the field. He also writes and consults for Japanese IT media and economic newspapers. We have been collecting overseas mobile phones for about 15 years, and the number of collection exceeds 1500. He is interested in "a world where people and things are seamlessly connected", and in recent years has expanded the scope of coverage to network systems such as LPWA and 5G.

What has changed with the 5G service that started in the United States?

Verizon's 5G service "Verizon 5G" has started in four cities: Indianapolis, Sacramento, Houston and Los Angeles. The service starts at $50/month (for Verizon cell phone subscribers or new subscribers). You can try the 5G experience thoroughly for free for 3 months after joining. Related articles

The maximum communication speed is 1 Gbps, which is the same as a wired home high-speed Internet service provided by an optical line. The actual average speed is said to be 300Mbps, which is also fast enough. High-speed internet service for homes will be provided first, and 5G smartphone service will follow in a few months. Verizon will provide Apple TV 4K and Google's Chromecast for free to 5G service subscribers. In addition, YouTube TV, which allows you to watch TV by streaming, can be used for free for 3 months. In other words, we are proposing to use the Internet line as it is as a TV. Of course, you can also use these devices and services on 4G lines. However, with a 4G line, there may be pauses while watching a broadcast, or the image quality may suddenly drop. 5G lines, on the other hand, won't be slow enough to interrupt streaming broadcasts. Even now, you can use high-speed internet services using fiber-optic lines. However, in order to use the fiber-optic line, it is necessary to do in-house construction, and it is troublesome to contract the construction during the moving trip. Verizon's 5G service, on the other hand, allows you to use high-speed lines by simply installing a home device called CPE at home and connecting it to a power supply. If you connect a home router to this CPE and connect that router to a TV, PC, smartphone or tablet, you can use 5G anywhere in your home.

The effective speed is 10 times faster than 4G, and television is distributed over the Internet

Examples of home internet services being provided wirelessly have already been implemented using 4G, and in Japan, UQ is still using the WiMAX2 system. They sell models and portable routers. UQ can reach a maximum speed of 758 Mbps, which is close to Verizon's 1 Gbps (1024 Mbps). However, when I actually use the UQ line, it is rare to see constant output even at 100Mpbs. 10Mbps is a realistic number. On the other hand, Verizon's 5G can deliver 300Mbps on average. This is exactly the biggest feature of 5G, enabling high-speed communication that is more than 10 times faster than 4G. With 5G streaming broadcasts, you can watch high-definition 4K videos without stress. No more renting DVDs or trying to download movies from the internet. By the way, if you have a high-speed 5G line, you can download a single movie in just a few seconds. However, even if you don't download it, you can play it by streaming when you want to watch it with 5G as a matter of course. Overseas, the movement to distribute TV over the Internet is accelerating, and the start of 5G will change the way movies and TV are viewed.
